Farmlevel Story
The Long Miles Coffee Project founders, Ben and Kristy Carlson, moved to Burundi in 2011 and saw that both injustice and poor farming practices permeated the country's coffee industry. Through creating multiple washing stations, they have gone from working with just 50 families in 2011 to over 5,500 coffee-farming families, on eleven different hills. Microlots from these washing stations have consistently placed top 10 in the Cup of Excellence.
The Mutana's hills seem to roll into infinity, where this coffee is grown. The hills are covered in a never-ending tapestry of green and possess the most breathtaking panoramic views. The edge of the Kibira Forest looms only a couple of kilometers away which allows mist to fall from the forest and tumble onto farmers' fields daily. With its mix of silty and sandy soils, Mutana can grow everything people like to eat. Wheat, cassava, potato, onions, peas, beans, sweet potato, passion fruit, and tea are grown alongside coffee.
